The giant of computer industry, the corporation IBM, has developed new software that can predict the occurrence of traffic jam about an hour before it happens. The data from this system will give drivers an opportunity to change a route they planned to avoid traffic jams and save much fuel, time and nerves. Using predictive program modeling, software uses a combination of data in real time from sensors and cameras installed on roads. Adding to the weather forecast and statistics gathered over many years, the system is able to issue a forecast with an extremely high percentage of probability.
Assembles statistical data is rechecked every six weeks, according to the results of this check in the mathematical model the corrections are made, making the results more accurate and allowing to count seasonal changes, period of holiday and other factors affecting the intensity of movement.
Information about predictions of the system can be transmitted to drivers via satellite navigation systems, roadside electronic billboards and signs, and also via voice and text messages sent by cellular network. Interaction with the transport system will reduce the traffic in such a way that the formation of jams will become highly unlikely. This system will be reached by providing different drivers with various recommendations for changes to the routes of their movements.
During the test of the system predicting traffic jams that were held in Singapore, the probability of the prediction was 85-93 per cent. That allowed drivers to reduce the movement time around the city during peak hours almost on half. Such systems are already being tested in several U.S. cities, and IBM already have two contracts for deployment of full copies of the system designed to streamline traffic in major cities.
